Mesa Verde's Volunteer Program
The National Park Service Volunteers-In-Parks Program (VIP) was authorized by Public Law 91-357 enacted in 1970. The primary purpose of the VIP program is to provide a vehicle through which the National Park Service can accept and use voluntary help and services from the public. The major objective of the program is to utilize this help in a way that is beneficial to the National Park Service, visitors to the parks, and to the volunteers.
Volunteers are accepted from the public without regard to race, creed, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability.
Mesa Verde's Volunteer ProgramThroughout its history Mesa Verde has benefited from significant contributions by its VIPs. There are two easy paths for volunteering your time: some choose to immerse themselves in particular projects or park departments for a few weeks or even months at a time, while others work in the park regularly on a schedule that fits their indivdual needs, perhaps as often as weekly or sometimes as infrequently as a few times a year.
During the Park's preparation for its 2006 Centennial year celebration, this second path for volunteers arose, and it has grown to include a large group of southwest Coloradans who invest their energies in the park they value. This website has been created and is maintained by that group, whose members were honored by receiving the National Park Service's George Hartzog Award as the Outstanding Volunteer Program for their efforts during the centennial year celebration.
If you'd like to join us, we'll facilitate your involvement in the park in whatever way you choose to contribute. Please contact us directly with questions or suggestions by using the "Contact Us" tab above, or contact us through the park's site on the "Links" tab.
In addition to enabling sign-up for new volunteers, this website provides a place for information sharing, activity announcements, and scheduling.
